Black Female Therapist | Therapist of Color

You are the most capable person in every room you walk into. So where is the room where growth and challenge happens?

You have been managing the weight for long enough that managing it has started to feel like a personality. You have tried to address it, a few sessions here, a wellness app there, a weekend away that helped for exactly forty-eight hours. The progress stalled not because you did not try, but because those spaces were not built for the specific, compounded, load-bearing weight of all that you are carrying. You are in the right place.

I became this kind of therapist because I know what it costs to be in rooms that were never built to hold you.

I went looking for therapeutic support as a teenager in New York City, navigating complex trauma, grief, and the daily weight of systemic racism inside a family and community living through things most therapy rooms did not have language for. The practice I needed did not exist. I built the skills anyway.

By the time I earned my MSW at Columbia and my LCSW, I had already done the unspoken work that most of my future clients would recognize on sight: defying impossible odds in rooms that were never designed to hold me. What I carry into every session is not just clinical training. It is the shared context of someone who has lived inside the story you usually have to explain from scratch.

Sound familiar?

You have done so much work on yourself. You should not still feel this way

You are the one everyone leans on. There is no space in your life where you are allowed to need something back.

Every time you slow down, the guilt is immediate. Rest has never actually felt like rest.

You tried therapy before and spent the first few sessions explaining your context before anything real could happen. You did not go back.

Your body is sending signals that doctors cannot explain and rest does not fix.

The milestone came and went. The relief did not arrive. You are already planning the next one.

I believe that what the world calls high-achieving in BIPOC professionals is often the survival skill those professionals built to navigate family stress, systemic racism, and rooms that were never designed for them.

That skill is not a flaw. It is the proof of what you have already done.

What I have seen across twelve years of clinical work is that the compounding underneath never resolves on its own. It waits. It shows up in our body, in our relationships, in the quiet moment after the win when the relief you were promised does not arrive.

What I know with certainty is that when mental health and wellness are addressed at the source, people and their communities flourish in their own resilience and success.

This is what we bring into every session: clinical rigor, shared cultural context, and the unwavering belief that the same determination that built your external life can build the internal one that sustains it.

Olivia Sterling, LCSW — Black Therapist and group practice owner — Fluent in the context you have spent your whole career translating.

I know what you have built and I understand what it took to build it. Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master of Science in Social Work, I work with high-achieving BIPOC professionals who are ready to address what excellence has cost them at the clinical level it deserves.

My approach draws from EMDR, Attachment-Based Therapy, Relational Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, Trauma Focused CBT, somatic work, Advance Care Planning, and Grief and Bereavement counseling, not as a menu, but as a precise, individualized clinical framework built around your specific presentation.

I hold certifications in Trauma Focused CBT and EMDR, with specialized training in racial trauma, intersectional identity, and the clinical formulation of high-profile, high-stress BIPOC lives. What clients consistently experience here is a space where the full picture is treated as the starting point, not a complexity to manage around. Sessions are concierge in feel and clinical in substance. No standardized treatment.Real, measurable change, with sustainable results.

Olivia is An Afro-Latina professional

Who has spent years navigating systemic racism, being the only one in the room, and performing composure under scrutiny does not simply relax because the environment is warm.

Safety has to be built on something more specific: shared context, cultural fluency, and a therapeutic relationship honest enough to challenge as much as it holds. That shift changed everything about how I work. I no longer wait for the client to feel comfortable enough to bring the full picture into the room. I build the room so the full picture has nowhere else to go.

“Olivia has walked with me from emerging to young adulthood, and in doing so I've become more present and assured due to her therapeutic process. “I have worked with Olivia since 2021 and cannot emphasize how transformative of an experience I have had over the last six years. I am immeasurably privileged to have had the opportunity to work with her through some of the most challenging years of my twenties. Olivia is one of my biggest supporters and confidants, and always there to listen without judgement. She has equipped me with tools and techniques to manage my anxiety and navigate turbulent moments and life changes. During a time when I felt truly "stuck," she was patient and compassionate. Through the years, she has encouraged me to develop the confidence to move forward and pursue some of my most lofty goals. We have explored topics like family dynamics, relationships, grief and career changes. One of the best things about my time working with Olivia has been her ability to help me reconnect with parts of myself that I felt like I forgot about. Olivia encouraged me to pursue one of my already existing but somewhat dormant hobbies, including running. I took up running again, which has brought me so much peace and mental clarity and I am pleased to say that I got into the New York City Marathon this fall. I highly recommend her services to anyone looking for trauma-informed care to help them feel "unstuck" and reconnect with themselves.”

"Working with Olivia has been such a gift. She’s patient, kind, insightful, compassionate, adaptable, and attentive (aka everything that you’d want a therapist to embody). But something that makes working with her feel really special and safe is her cultural and sociopolitical fluency. She understands that just like trauma, our identities and our worlds are complex, and she does a brilliant job honoring and holding all of those complexities in balance. I feel really seen in her care, and through her guidance and support, I’ve been able to build my skill set and resilience for navigating life’s challenges, and find my way back to reclaiming my voice and sense of self.”

No matter what I come into a session with - whether it is grief, depression, fears, work stress, or life changes - Olivia helps me work through it all with such care. I'm so grateful for everything Sterling Counseling has done for me.”

“Olivia has helped me thoughtfully navigate several major transitions in my romantic relationships, familial relationships, friendships, my career, and my mental and physical health. She has skillfully blended different therapeutic modalities to help me address my unique circumstances and challenges, so I always feel like I have a way to approach the things I bring to therapy that is tailored exactly to me. Olivia balances challenging me to think differently when necessary, while also remaining warm and non-judgmental. I have made significant progress with my overall mental health. Thanks to my work with Olivia, I know myself better, I am managing my challenges better, and I feel empowered."

Testimonials

A few things worth knowing outside the clinical hour.

Since establishing Sterling Counseling in July of 2020, I have worked with high-achieving Black and Brown professionals across New York City and surrounding areas, executives, founders, on-camera talent, public figures, and community leaders who arrived composed and left, over time, with something more useful than composure: an internal life that could finally hold the external one they had already built.

The door to this practice is open. What I hope you experience when you walk through it, is that you have finally arrived somewhere that was built for you.

The person who has carried this the longest deserves a room that can actually hold them.
