Black Therapists in Tribeca, NY | Therapy for BIPOC
Sterling Counseling serves the high-profile BIPOC professionals who live and work in Tribeca with the clinical depth and discretion that this neighborhood demands. The practice was built for people who have achieved a level of external recognition that made finding a clinical space with the appropriate sophistication and cultural competence genuinely difficult. The work here requires no explanation of why navigating systems not designed for you has a cost, even when you are winning. Tribeca occupies the blocks between Canal Street to the north and Chambers Street to the south, with the Hudson River Park tracing its western edge and SoHo pressing against its eastern boundary. Cast-iron buildings that once housed textile merchants now contain the loft apartments of film producers, technology investors, media figures, and finance executives. Greenwich Street and Varick Street define the neighborhood's interior grid. The Holland Tunnel approach brings traffic up from New Jersey on the western edge. Hudson Square transitions into the neighborhood's northern streets. Battery Park City's towers are visible to the south. The cobblestone blocks between loft buildings are quiet in a way that the rest of lower Manhattan is not, and that quiet is part of the neighborhood's value to the people who choose it. Discretion is a commodity in Tribeca. The clients this practice serves from this neighborhood are often recognized in professional contexts beyond their immediate industry. Their names appear in financial journalism, on charitable boards, in entertainment credits, on architecture websites. Being a high-profile BIPOC person in one of the wealthiest and whitest enclaves in the city creates a specific kind of visibility with a specific clinical cost. BIPOC therapist Tribeca means holding all of that with the confidentiality and clinical rigor it requires.

Here is how the work unfolds.

Discretion and clinical depth from the first conversation
Sterling Counseling holds confidentiality as a clinical and professional standard, not a procedural minimum. High-profile clients in Tribeca can expect the same discretion afforded to any aspect of their professional and personal lives. The clinical work begins with establishing the full picture: the professional context and its demands, the racial and cultural history, the somatic record the body has accumulated, and the relational and childhood history still shaping the present.
Access begins with a conversation
New clients begin with a free 15-minute consultation by telehealth. There is no paperwork required to make contact and no clinical vocabulary required to initiate the conversation. The consultation establishes fit, answers questions, and allows both parties to determine whether this is the right clinical relationship to begin.
Outcomes with durability
High-profile professionals in Tribeca describe the work with Sterling Counseling as producing the kind of change that holds across the environments where the stakes are highest. The interior experience begins to correspond more fully to the external picture of excellence. The vigilance that has been running beneath performance begins to settle. What changes is qualitative and observable rather than conceptual.

The BIPOC professionals in Tribeca who seek individual therapy through this practice are often at the apex of industries that have very rarely produced people who look like them. The specific psychological experience of being the exception at the highest level of your field, in a neighborhood where wealth is the default and racial diversity is the exception, requires clinical work that understands both dimensions as primary. The work produces a shift in the interior experience that matches the extraordinary external one. Achievements begin to register genuinely rather than being immediately displaced by the next threat. The internal vigilance that has never been switched off begins to soften. What has been managed begins to be felt. Racial and cultural context is the clinical foundation from the very first session. No period of explanation. No standardized protocol applied without regard for what the client actually carries. The work is built around the full complexity of what it means to have arrived where this client has arrived.

Grief does not observe the social expectations of Tribeca's professional culture. For high-profile BIPOC professionals, the loss of a parent, a partner, or a cultural figure of deep personal meaning arrives in the middle of lives that have no obvious space for it. The public dimension of grief for people whose lives are partly public adds a layer of complexity this service is built to hold. The work creates a private clinical container for what cannot be expressed publicly. Anticipatory grief, bereavement, collective mourning, and the unnamed losses that accumulate over a career of exceptional performance are all held here with equal clinical seriousness. Where advance care planning belongs in the clinical picture, it is integrated naturally. The practical dimensions of preparing for end-of-life and the emotional weight of loving someone who is dying are addressed as a coherent whole.

High-net-worth BIPOC couples in Tribeca navigate a relational landscape that includes the demands of two significant careers, the isolation of being one of very few BIPOC households in a predominantly white wealthy enclave, and the cultural histories each partner brings to how love, conflict, and intimacy are expressed. For LGBTQ+ and non-binary couples, the additional weight of identity affirmation in high-profile settings is part of the relational picture. As this work progresses, the capacity for genuine presence in the relationship grows. The managed distance that has passed for connection begins to give way to something more actual. The patterns that have cycled through the same relational content for years begin to shift at a deeper level. Emotion-Focused Therapy and Attachment-Based approaches provide the clinical foundation. This practice is LGBTQ+ affirming and holds both partners' intersectional identities as central to the work.

High-profile BIPOC professionals in Tribeca carry trauma histories that the achievement has not erased. The racial incidents that lodged in the body during the years of ascent. The childhood experiences that are still writing the patterns of adult relationships. The specific moments that destabilized something that had not been fully stable since. The altitude of current success does not resolve what was experienced on the way up. This work produces a change at the level of the nervous system. The activation that has been running at a baseline below awareness begins to settle. Specific memories lose their current charge. A steadiness emerges that no amount of professional achievement or self-awareness had been able to produce. Trauma treatment is calibrated to each client's specific history and paced for what their nervous system is ready to process. The clinical approaches reach trauma at the level where it is actually stored rather than requiring an indefinite verbal account of what happened.

For high-profile BIPOC professionals in Tribeca, there is a category of experience that professional success has not and cannot address. The racial encounter the body is still processing years after the mind moved on. The childhood or early-career wound that continues to write the relational script despite years of awareness. The public moment that cracked something that the subsequent achievement has papered over but not repaired. EMDR reaches those experiences at the level where they are held. What clients describe after this work is not simply a new story about the past. It is a changed physiological relationship to it. The memories that activated fully no longer carry that charge. The triggers that produced disproportionate responses become manageable. The baseline shifts to something qualitatively different. The eight-phase protocol is applied with cultural fluency and paced according to what the client's nervous system is genuinely ready for. Preparation phases receive the full clinical attention they require.

High-profile BIPOC professionals in Tribeca who come to CBT typically bring considerable cognitive sophistication alongside patterns that have not responded to it. The anxiety is understood and still present. The perfectionism is analyzed and still governing the schedule. CBT here is culturally grounded, which means the racial and systemic context of those patterns is held as part of the clinical formulation from the beginning. The changes that emerge are a quieter internal environment. The thought cycles become less frequent and less consuming. The anxiety scales to actual conditions rather than running at a constant low pitch. The reactivity that once defined certain interactions becomes a more measured response. Where cognitive patterns have deeper roots, the work extends accordingly. The approach adapts to what the client's presentation actually requires rather than applying a standardized protocol to every case.

The paradox of imposter syndrome at Tribeca's professional altitude is that its intensity is proportional to its apparent absurdity. The person with the longest credential list in the room, the most demonstrably successful track record in the firm, the most recognizable name in the industry. And still the internal experience of imminence, that the moment of exposure is only deferred, not avoided. The change this work produces is a changed relationship to internal authority. The competence that has been demonstrated across years of genuine distinction becomes something the client can actually inhabit rather than perpetually validate. The audit quiets. The clinical approach holds the cognitive dimension alongside the systemic one. The distinction between distorted thinking and an accurate reading of environments that withheld validation along racial lines is part of what the work addresses.

The ultra-high-net-worth BIPOC executives and founders in Tribeca who seek coaching support need a coaching relationship that can hold both the scale of what they are building and the racial reality of how they are building it. The experience of exercising authority in environments that did not anticipate your presence, of leading institutions while navigating the subtle and not-so-subtle dynamics of being the exception at the top, is both a strategic question and a psychological one. Clients describe the coaching as producing a clarified sense of their own leadership, less shaped by the demands of the environment and more grounded in what they are actually trying to build and why. The gap between performed leadership and genuine leadership begins to narrow. Twelve years of clinical work with BIPOC high achievers at every level of professional success inform the coaching. The cultural and racial dimensions of leadership are central, not peripheral.

“I have worked with Olivia since 2021 and cannot emphasize how transformative of an experience I have had over the last six years. I am immeasurably privileged to have had the opportunity to work with her through some of the most challenging years of my twenties. Olivia is one of my biggest supporters and confidants, and always there to listen without judgement. She has equipped me with tools and techniques to manage my anxiety and navigate turbulent moments and life changes. During a time when I felt truly "stuck," she was patient and compassionate. Through the years, she has encouraged me to develop the confidence to move forward and pursue some of my most lofty goals. We have explored topics like family dynamics, relationships, grief and career changes. One of the best things about my time working with Olivia has been her ability to help me reconnect with parts of myself that I felt like I forgot about. Olivia encouraged me to pursue one of my already existing but somewhat dormant hobbies, including running. I took up running again, which has brought me so much peace and mental clarity and I am pleased to say that I got into the New York City Marathon this fall. I highly recommend her services to anyone looking for trauma-informed care to help them feel "unstuck" and reconnect with themselves.”

"Working with Olivia has been such a gift. She’s patient, kind, insightful, compassionate, adaptable, and attentive (aka everything that you’d want a therapist to embody). But something that makes working with her feel really special and safe is her cultural and sociopolitical fluency. She understands that just like trauma, our identities and our worlds are complex, and she does a brilliant job honoring and holding all of those complexities in balance. I feel really seen in her care, and through her guidance and support, I’ve been able to build my skill set and resilience for navigating life’s challenges, and find my way back to reclaiming my voice and sense of self.”

“My experience with Sterling Counseling has been transformative. Olivia's style allows me to feel comfortable and safe while working through the toughest moments of my life. Therapy here doesn't feel like a chore, but an active part of my mental wellness routine with tools and recommendations that are easy to act on. No matter what I come into a session with - whether it is grief, depression, fears, work stress, or life changes - Olivia helps me work through it all with such care. I'm so grateful for everything Sterling Counseling has done for me.”

“Olivia has helped me thoughtfully navigate several major transitions in my romantic relationships, familial relationships, friendships, my career, and my mental and physical health. She has skillfully blended different therapeutic modalities to help me address my unique circumstances and challenges, so I always feel like I have a way to approach the things I bring to therapy that is tailored exactly to me. Olivia balances challenging me to think differently when necessary, while also remaining warm and non-judgmental. I have made significant progress with my overall mental health. Thanks to my work with Olivia, I know myself better, I am managing my challenges better, and I feel empowered."

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How to find an aligned Black therapist?

Finding a Black therapist in New York who is the right clinical fit, not just culturally competent on paper, but actually built for the specific complexity of your life, takes more than a directory search. Start by identifying what you actually need from the work: racial trauma treatment, evidence-based modalities, a practice designed for high-achieving professionals, or all of the above. Sterling Counseling was built for exactly this. You can reach out directly through the contact page to start a conversation and find out whether this is the right fit before committing to anything.

  • Is it important to see a Black therapist as a Black person?

For many clients, yes, and the clinical reasons go deeper than representation. A Black therapist brings shared cultural context that changes what is possible in the room. You do not have to spend sessions explaining why racial microaggressions affect your sleep, or why being the only one in a room of hundreds carries a specific kind of weight. That context is already in the room, which means the work can begin where it actually needs to, not at the level of education, but at the level of treatment. At Sterling Counseling, racial trauma is not a side topic. It is part of the clinical formulation from session one.

  • What is a red flag for a Black therapist?

For high-achieving BIPOC professionals, the most common red flag is a therapist who cannot hold the full context. If you spend the first several sessions explaining what systemic racism costs before the actual work can begin, that room is not built for you. Other red flags include feeling judged for your success, having your cultural or racial experience minimized or sidestepped, receiving generic treatment that does not account for your specific life, or leaving sessions more depleted than when you arrived. At Sterling Counseling, the context you have spent years translating is the clinical floor we start on, not a detour.

  • I have tried therapy before and it did not help. How is this different?

Most therapy rooms are not built for the specific clinical complexity of high-achieving BIPOC professionals. If your previous experience required you to educate your therapist before the real work could begin, or if the treatment felt disconnected from the actual weight you were carrying, that is a failure of fit, not a failure of therapy or of you.

  • Do I need a diagnosis to work with you?

No. Many of the clients who come to Sterling Counseling are high-functioning by every external measure and have never received a formal diagnosis. What they carry, racial trauma, childhood attachment wounds, unnamed ADHD, the long performance of composure, does not always come with a label. You do not need one to begin. You need a clinical space built to hold the full picture and a clinician trained to work with it precisely.

  • What does the first session look like?

The first session is a conversation, not an assessment. We use the time to begin building the clinical picture together, your history, your current experience, what brought you here, and what you want from the work. There is no script and no standardized intake form driving the agenda. By the end of the first session, you should have a clear sense of whether this space feels right and what working together could look like. The goal is for you to leave feeling met, not processed.

  • Do you accept insurance?

Yes. We accept the following insurance plans for grief counseling services. Private pay is also available. If you're using out-of-network benefits, we can also provide a superbill for reimbursement.

We use Thrizer as our payment platform to process out-of-network benefits and payments. Out-of-pocket rates are available as outlined above.

    Accepted insurance plans include:

    • Aetna
    • Oscar
    • Optum
    • United Healthcare
    • Cigna

    • Carelon Behavioral Health
  • Are sessions in person or virtual?
